15 October is the day when Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata made Whole India Proud

he story of India’s national carrier Air India goes back a long time, way before the country even got its Independence. The airline, which is now the largest international carrier out of the country and serves passengers over 60 international destinations in four continents, was founded in the year 1932 by Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and was called Tata Air Services.

For those who are unaware, JRD Tata played a huge role in getting India its first commercial airline service. JRD was not only a business tycoon from the Tata family but was also an Indian aviator. After winning the commercial licence in 1929, JRD founded the airlines in 1932 after he won the contract to carry mails for Imperial Airways.

Soon after, Tata formed the aviation department of the group and roped in two de Havilland Puss Moths. In the same year on October 15, Tata flew one of the Puss Moths with the air mail shipment from Karachi to Mumbai (Bombay), following which the aircraft was flown to Chennai (Madras) by Nevill Vintcent, who was a Royal Airforce pilot and a dear friend of JRD Tata. So, this was the story of Air India’s first flight which occurred when the national carrier was not even a government-owned entity.

In its initial years of service, the airline used to deliver weekly mails between Karachi, Chennai via Ahmedabad and Mumbai. If reports are to be believed, the airline flew approximately 1,60,000 miles in its first year of operation and carried about 9.71 tonnes of mail. It made a profit of $870 dollars.

Later, Tata Air Services was rechristened to Tata Airlines when its first commercial flight from Mumbai was launched to Trivandrum. By 1938, Colombo and Delhi were also added to the airline’s list of destinations.

It had helped the Royal Airforce with the movement of troops, supply shipment and rescue of refugees in World War II as well. However, Tata Airlines became a publicly listed company under the name Air India on July 29, 1946. After India’s independence, 49 per cent of the airline’s stake was acquired by the government of India (GOI).

The complete nationalisation of the airline took place in 1953 when the GOI passed the Air Corporations Act and purchased a majority stake in the carrier from Tata Group but JRD remained as its chairman till 1977.

Currently, the airline is facing a significant bout of turbulence as its debts continue to swell. The government had decided to privatise it through auction but could not find a bidder for the same.

Ashoka the great

Ahoka ,  also spelled  Aśoka  (died  238?  bce , India) last major emperor in the  Mauryan  dynasty of  India . His vigorous patronage of  Buddhism  during his reign ( c.  265–238  bce ; also given as  c.  273–232 bce ) furthered the expansion of that  religion  throughout India. Following his successful but bloody conquest of the  Kalinga  country on the east coast, Ashoka renounced armed conquest and adopted a policy that he called “conquest by  dharma ” (i.e., by principles of right life). In order to gain wide publicity for his teachings and his work, Ashoka made them known by means of oral announcements and by engravings on rocks and pillars at suitable sites. These inscriptions—the  rock edicts  and pillar edicts (e.g., the  lion  capital of the pillar found at  Sarnath , which has become India’s national emblem), mostly dated in various years of his reign—...
